The text “The Essentials of Education” from Essays, Short Stories and One-Act Plays by Sir Richard Livingstone, in RK Kaushik and SC Bhatia, Eds. features in B.Ed. 1st Year’s General English book (Tribhuvan University). The gist of the message that Livingstone tries to give is provided here in the following points:
- (First-rate = best)
- The purpose of every course is to help the student to learn what is first-rate in the particular subject he studies.
- If it is a course in agriculture, he should know the best methods in farming. If it is a course in cookery, he should know how to cook really well. If it is in teaching, then, he should know how to teach in the best way.
- Where does one learn what is first-rate? The only way to learn it is to meet it, i.e., meeting the people who are known to have/possess the first-rate.
- Where do we get to meet these people? In literature. Best literature teaches us the best of our human conducts and living.
